Is it possible to store human DNA in human hair samples?

Hair itself contains no useable DNA it is only when the hair has been pulled out from the root leaving cells from the follicle attached to the base that a full DNA profile can be extracted.

Therefore yes you can strore DNA for long periods of time if done correctly, but in terms of hair it needs to be hair that's been ripped out from the roots, not cut off at the barbers.

Mitochondrial DNA does exist, but it is not a full profile and simple profiles your matriarchal line of descent from 'eve' as the first known is called. So it can't be used to identify you individually as you will share it with multiple others.

Is it possible to store human DNA in human hair samples?

yes, because it's made up of cells that carries the DNA in the mitochondria.

Definitely, hair is as good as a finger print

The hair follicle contains DNA and by properly preserving it you can retrieve it many years later.

Is it possible to store human DNA in human hair samples?

Yes. Contained in the hair root.

The first answer is partly bullpoo, mitochondria are involved in cellular respiration, nothing to do with Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA).

Yes DNA is found in hair samples, that's why the fuzz are testing them in a current murder case (i believe you may be alluding to this). The hair itself is made up of Keratin (a protein) and dead cells. So no DNA is found in the hair itself. However if the root has been pulled out with the hair then DNA is contained in that.

i agree with Badgergi..human DNA is contained in hair roots..so if a hair follicle with its root is conserved..then human DNA can be retrived from it.

Is it possible to store human DNA in human hair samples?

ledzep is wrong, because DNA is defintiely found in the mitochondria. In fact the mitochondrial DNA is inherited only from the mother, so if your hair follicles are destroyed, then you'll only have mitochondrial DNA. It's helpful but might not be what is needed as you will share the same mitochondrial DNA with everyone from our mother's side of the family.

Don't you watch CSI?
